PostSubject: Runaway Dragon [Hyunwoo]   Mon May 28, 2018 3:21 pm

The gap year had been good for her. She'd spent the time back home with her family and friends, able to spend quality time not just with those she'd kept in touch with via owl, but her muggle friends that had no idea where she was. It wasn't like she could facetime them or anything, what with her being surrounded by a castle. She'd messaged them on and off, but there was nothing like sitting down with them at a mamak and bonding over roti and teh tarik.

That hadn't been the only reason she'd opted to take a year off school; she wanted to do some research into what she could potentially do once she graduated. Sure, that was four years away, but it never hurt to have a plan. The wizarding hospitals in Malaysia were very similar to the muggle ones -- that is to say, most were lacking, and if they weren't, they were expensive and money-making businesses instead of a place to help those hurt and injured. Azura wanted to change this. She'd gone around to different hospitals, using her father's status and whatnot to go behind the scenes; what she found disappointed her greatly. There were no hospitals she wanted to help or put her time into. Even her oldest sister, who worked at one of those hospitals, agreed with her.

And that was how the idea of starting her own hospital was born. Scouting around, she'd found an abandoned factory that could easily be converted. All she needed was the money. It wasn't difficult to persuade both her father and some of her richer friends to pool together resources, and a substantial loan from the bank had also been taken. The place was bought in advance. She wouldn't start renovation work until much later, but she didn't want to risk losing the place.

Getting into university with her grades hadn't been difficult, and she soon received an acceptance letter from a more prestigious University in the UK. Heading back, therefore, hadn't been too difficult; she was excited to learn, and she was familiar with the UK.

Three months later and she was neck deep in classes, despite the Professors saying this term would be 'light and easy'. It was after class one day, and Azura was already feeling rather tired from the three hour lecture. Stepping out into the cool air, she smiled. She was glad that the weather in the UK was always cool -- Summer or not -- and stepped out onto the path leading down to the lake. Seating herself down on a bench, she pulled out one of her favourite novels and opened it to the bookmarked page.

She was just getting into the story when movement caught her attention and she turned, eyes opening wide as she saw a tiny dragon bounding towards her. "Ya Allah!" she cried, hand flying to her heart.

[Ya Allah = something akin to 'oh my god']

Throughout his years immersed in magic society, rescuing dozens of creatures from the hands of dishonest people, Hyunwoo had faced countless tests of his strength, patience, determination, and even fashion. He had handled everything from rogue kneazles to indignant Jarveys, and had certainly been bitten, scratched, and otherwise wounded before gaining trust, documenting every animal and ensuring they went to better places before moving on to the next. He had worked alongside respected magizoologists, albeit in secret, assisting them in reconnaissance and taking action. He had years of experience under his belt, and aimed to add decades more, even if he did get caught and expelled at the mercy of a tiny, mischievous dragon.

The Antipodean Opaleye was barely a few months old, but was already getting into too much trouble for comfort. Hyunwoo had rescued her from the underground just days after her hatching, having tracked her egg’s whereabouts for weeks before then, until finally the opportunity to get her out had arisen. She truly was a beautiful creature, pure white, an extremely rare species—he wanted to do his best to raise her enough for her to be able to survive on her own, and perhaps even return to her home country in New Zealand; but for now she was too little for such a long journey, or even to fend for herself. Of course, that never stopped her from wiggling out of Hyunwoo’s grasp and half flying half jumping away across university grounds, just begging to be seen and get Hyunwoo into trouble. Perhaps he could have come up with a more creative name than Yong, given that it was quite literally “dragon” in his native language, but he felt it was still fitting.

If his brother knew he was chasing a tiny dragon across campus, Hyunwoo was sure he would be laughed at—but then likely helped—and he surely did not want to find out what the headmaster would do if word got out he had a category XXXXX magical creature just hanging around, not even secure enough to keep from escaping his watch. So despite how ridiculous he might have looked, as if chasing after a bird, Hyunwoo had to chase down Yong.

That was more difficult than it seemed: every time he got even close to her she jumped, fluttered her small wings, and ended up farther away before scrambling a little ways more, waiting for him to catch up, then jumping again. She was almost teasing him, always barely out of reach no matter how fast he ran. Of course, he wasn't eager to run his fastest, he would rather risk expulsion than hurting Yong, but he was getting somewhat desperate since they were in the open, whispering loudly to scold her in both English and Korean.

Then, just like that, Yong froze entirely. Hyunwoo rushed just quick enough to scoop her up and hold tight as she squirmed and flapped for a second, before finally settling into his familiar arms. “Yong-ah,” he sighed, and it almost seemed that she looked smug, “come on, don't run away,” he lifted her up to look in her pale eyes, “you'll get us both in trouble.”

Then Hyunwoo finally realized that Yong had only stopped because there was someone else there, who had undoubtedly noticed Yong was a dragon and not anything else, but as he stared somewhat dumbly he realized the girl looked vaguely familiar—same school, perhaps? He couldn't quite place her, but certainly noticed her hijab, recognizing her almost subconsciously as also Muslim and greeting her accordingly then immediately apologizing, “As-salamu alaykum—I am so sorry, I really didn't mean to let Yong-ah get away from me, she really doesn't mean any harm—” he winced as the said dragon bit one of his fingers a bit too hard, pulling his hand away and trying to send an awkward smile at the girl. If nothing else, maybe if he made a good impression she wouldn't mention him hiding a dragon against school rules, and that was probably the most he could hope for.

It wasn't the fact that she'd never seen a dragon before -- one of the professors in Hogwarts had a few babies that he'd shown them, and there were dragon stables nearby that she'd visited during orientation day -- but rather the fact that it was tiny, and did not seem to be one of those belonging to the school. (Those ones had tiny bands around their legs, similar to the kind put on wild birds, identifying them.) Before she had a chance to do anything -- not that she knew what to do -- a male had come running over and scooped up the tiny thing.

Her eyes could not open any wider, or they would have. Instead, the book falling to the floor, she stood abruptly, turning to get a proper look. She recognised him. Or, at least, there was something about him that rang familiar, like she'd seen him before. She probably had -- the university wasn't the largest -- but who he was and why he had a dragon, she wasn't sure.

"Waʿalaykumu as-salam," she replied, the greeting slipping out almost automatically; she wasn't aware of what she was saying until she heard it aloud in her voice. Noting instinctively that he had not reached out to offer his hand, she made a mental reminder not to go near him. If he didn't want contact, she would respect that; it was, after all, his prerogative, especially since she was unmarried. His race startled her a little, but she chided herself as soon as the thought entered her. What did it matter what race they were? Allah didn't care, so why should she make it a big deal? Forgive me for judging so quickly, brother, she thought, but didn't say aloud. There was no need for him to know what she had done.

Instead, she turned her attention to the dragon, finally realising his words from earlier and wincing with him as she saw the dragon nip at his finger. She didn't like to see anyone get hurt, especially not a brother. "Are you hurt? I can help..." She trailed off, gesturing to his injured hand. "I'm studying to be a Healer." There was a slight, awkward pause. "I did not know there were other Muslims here," she added, offering him a smile as her eyes drifted from his face to the dragon and back towards him.

Hyunwoo had always managed to keep his less-than-legal-but-still-moral activities more or less hidden, except of course to those who could help him, but then, faced with a complete stranger, he started to worry about someone finding out. Not that getting expelled would interrupt his long term goals—he would still chase after creatures to rescue—but part of him wanted so strongly to avoid stepping off the set path of education. Call him old fashioned, but even a gap year had seemed an impossible idea when the opportunity presented itself, despite how useful it might have been. All of that free time just waiting to be used for good—who knew what his mother would say, though, and he dreaded to even consider his brother's words.

So yes, Hyunwoo was quite scared of this new person exposing his possession of a dragon, and he couldn't be sure yet if that fear was justified or not. But he still couldn't fight the sneaking suspicion that he had seen her before, and then he remembered. They had both attended Hogwarts he was sure, even in the same year but certainly a different house. He hadn't seen her all of last year, however, but perhaps she took a year off or transferred for whatever reason; he wasn't going to look down on anyone for taking a break, it just wasn't his thing.

Yong squirmed in his grasp, still trying to put up a fight even as Hyun held her securely in his arms, distracting him just slightly from the girl’s words. He took a second to realize her reason behind mentioning her course of study. “Huh? Oh,” He glanced down at his hand, taking in the teeth marks—they barely broke the skin, so fortunately had not drawn blood—before excusing them, “It's fine, she does this all the time, so I’m used to it.”

At that, Yong tried to nip him again, but he pulled his hand just out of reach and muttered to her quietly in Korean, “Yong-ah, geumanhae,” a soft plead for her to stop making a bad impression. He reached a hand around to the base of her neck, rubbing a little to make her relax, and within moments she was infinitely calmer.

Hyunwoo looked back up to the girl, collecting himself and responding to her last comment. “Ah, well, we’re likely the only two here. But it's certainly nice to meet you; I’m Hyunwoo,” he dipped his head slightly in greeting before continuing, “Have we… met before? Hogwarts, perhaps?” There was the chance that they hadn't, that he was thinking of someone else, but if he was right then it would make for a decent conversation topic.

[Geumanhae (그만해) - Stop that]

The reply made her frown slightly. Just because something happened over and over again didn't make it right; being used to something didn't mean it wasn't harmful. But she didn't say that. She wouldn't argue with him, not yet, anyway. He was older than her (or, at the very least, older in status) and he was a male. To argue against him if he wasn't a friend wasn't polite, and she didn't want to offend him. Besides, he didn't seem badly hurt. Nodding and adjusting her expression to a smile, Azura said, "I see."

She watched in curiosity as he spoke to the dragon. At the very least, it seemed to calm down and settle in his arms, and as the dragon stopped moving around, Azura relaxed a little more. It was small and didn't seem like it could cause too much trouble, but she knew that even tiny things could cause the biggest damage to a person. If it was calm, hopefully it wouldn't try anything.

"Azura," she replied, at the last moment holding herself back from offering a hand as she used to do. She wasn't dealing with a Westerner; she was dealing with a Muslim and the usual rules applied. "It's nice to meet you, too." The question made her pause, and her eyes darted back and forth as she tried to remember. She'd thought he looked familiar earlier, hadn't she? If he was right and they'd met before, that would explain it. It wasn't as though there were many Korean people in her life -- none, in fact.

"I did go to Hogwarts," she said, starting at the easiest part. "I was in Slytherin." She had started a year later -- at twelve -- but worked hard to catch up and had moved up halfway through her third year. There had been many friends made and many people she'd met. The male before her -- Hyunwoo, she reminded herself; she didn't want to forget his name -- hadn't been one of those, as far as she recalled. Perhaps if he had been at Hogwarts, he'd seen her around and vice versa, although none of those moments had been meaningful enough for her to remember.

"I think I've seen you around," she said. White lies never hurt, and she didn't want to admit that she had no idea who he was. "What house were you?"
